Central Park Rara

During the summer months, in New York City’s Central Park, the sounds of Haiti’s Lenten Celebration, Rara, are performed by members of the Haitian diaspora. Rara in Central Park is mainly a secular event intended to bring together members of the diaspora and fans of Haitian Culture. The presence of a Rara in New York City is a testament to both the predicaments of transnationalism and the reconstruction of cultural practices amongst migrant and diasporic communities. These photos were taken in 2017.
