J’Ouvert

Every year on Labor Day Weekend, across Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York, the J’Ouvert (“Break Day”) celebration takes place. In Brooklyn, J’Ouvert is a prelude to the Labor Day Carnival or West Indian Day Parade, one of the most lively and colorful carnivals outside the Caribbean. The J’Ouvert parade is one of the fullest expressions of Caribbean culture in New York City. These images were taken between 2017-2019.
